Adam Herrman’s adoptive parents charged with fraud:

It’s been a while since we last heard anything about Adam Herrman. For those of you who may not know, 11-year-old Adam disappeared from his Butler County, Kansas home in 1999. However, his adoptive Breeders, Doug and Valerie Herrman, did not report him missing until late 2008. No body has been found; however, investigators believe that Adam is dead.

However, from 1999 to 2005, the Herrmans collected government benefits on behalf of Adam, totaling the amount of $52,800. Today they turned themselves in on charges of welfare fraud.

The Herrmans claim that they didn’t report Adam missing because they feared losing their other children to the state.

I can’t even wrap my head around this… how do you collect benefits for a child you don’t have for 5-6 years? How does nobody notice that child is missing for 8-9 years???So sad. He looks like such a sweet boy. I hope authorities can find out what happened to him and bring the guilty party to justice (and the parents for allowing it and hiding it, if they’re not directly responsible.)

Here’s how nobody notices the child is missing – HOME SCHOOLING! Regardless of what parents think of local schools, at least school personnel are required by law to report suspected abuse etc. Which is why many abusers hide behind home schooling. Without getting into the pros and cons of home schooling, there should be a requirement that all children regardless of where they attend school should be visited a couple of times each year by appropriate authorities. Those home schooling parents who are doing a proper job have nothing to fear those who are hiding behind homeschooling in order to work their children, abuse them, hide them, or are simply too lazy or ignorant to teach their kids should be exposed.I’ll probably catch hell for saying this but Adam might be alive today if authorities had bothered to check on him.

I mostly agree with you. I think that the decision to homeschool is an admiral one, but there needs to be checks and balances. Not only because of the abuse or neglect angle, but to make sure that the children are being educated properly. I know that there are some checks in place right now, but to be honest, I have no idea what they are. I also think you’re right about him still being alive if ONE person had not only checked up on him, but followed up on that check.
