ICE Impersonators Commit Violent Crimes Against Migrants

Previously in my ‘civilian’ life, I spent years writing about scams on a daily basis. One of the most common scams I came across was the police impersonation scam. The details would change from case to case, but the basic formula was always the same. A scammer would pretend to be someone in law enforcement and use scare tactics to separate victims from their money.

One of the most notorious examples of these scams was the jury duty scam. Someone would call claiming to be from the local sheriff’s office or police department and tell the victim they had missed jury duty. The victim would then be informed that a warrant had been issued for their arrest and that the situation could be resolved immediately if they paid a fine. Of course, there was no warrant and no fine. There was only a scammer looking for a payday.

Immigrant communities have long been targeted by similar schemes. Fraudsters would pose as immigration officials, INS agents, or Border Patrol officers and threaten victims with detention or deportation unless they paid some imaginary fee or penalty. Immigrant families who were already living under tremendous stress could find themselves losing money they could not afford to lose.

As damaging as those scams could be, the victims generally lost money and little else. Having your savings stolen is devastating, especially for working families, but at least the crime usually ended there.

What’s happening now is far more dangerous.

A recent investigation by Noticias Telemundo documented a dramatic increase in crimes committed by people pretending to be federal immigration agents. According to the investigation, at least 31 such incidents were documented in 2025 alone, compared to an average of just over five cases per year during the previous decade.

Many of these incidents went far beyond fraud. Armed criminals reportedly entered homes while identifying themselves as immigration agents. Victims were robbed at gunpoint, and some were beaten badly enough to require medical treatment. Reports have also included allegations of sexual assault and rape. In other cases, people were terrorized, threatened, restrained, or assaulted by individuals falsely claiming to have federal authority.

The investigation also noted that many victims were reluctant to come forward. Some feared deportation while others feared retaliation from their attackers. That means the true number of incidents may never be known. If victims are too afraid to report crimes, there is no reliable way to determine how widespread the problem really is.

Maybe one of the most disturbing aspects of the report involves incidents that were not simply robberies or assaults but acts of vigilantism. Armed troglodytes are reportedly conducting their own so-called immigration operations, chasing and confronting people they believed were undocumented immigrants. In some cases, these self-appointed enforcers claimed they were helping defend the country from what they described as an invasion. Others allegedly searched for immigrants to target based solely on appearance or language. How long before the lynchings start?

This is what happens when federal agents are allowed to operate while masked and effectively anonymous.

Supporters of that practice argue that agents need face coverings to protect themselves from threats and harassment. Regardless of the reasoning, masks create a problem that should have been obvious from the beginning. They make it easier for bad actors to impersonate law enforcement.

Anybody can buy tactical gear, put on a balaclava, claim to be an immigration agent, and start barking orders. When legitimate agents conceal their identities and wear clothing that is difficult to distinguish from what can be purchased commercially, criminals gain a ready-made disguise.

The result is exactly what the Noticias Telemundo investigation documented. Vulnerable people become easy targets because they have no reliable way of knowing whether the person standing in front of them is an actual federal agent or a violent criminal taking advantage of them.

Public trust is one of the most important tools any law enforcement agency possesses. Once that trust is damaged, everyone suffers. Victims become less likely to report crimes. Witnesses become less willing to cooperate. Communities become more fearful and isolated. And criminals recognize the opportunity and move quickly to exploit it.

This is what the politics of hate has wrought. When public discourse turns entire groups of people into targets, some cretins inevitably decide they have permission to act on that hostility. Others see an opportunity for profit and violence. The end result is the same. Innocent people become victims while criminals hide behind the appearance of authority.

Nobody should have to wonder whether the armed person at their door is a legitimate law enforcement officer or a psychopath wearing a costume. Yet for many immigrant families today, that uncertainty has become a frightening reality.
