In my post about Colt Gray’s sentencing, I asked what the deal was with his mom, and I also asked why nobody seemed to be investigating or charging her. Turns out we finally have an answer, and it’s about as satisfying as you’d expect. And by satisfying, I mean about as satisfying as a stale saltine cracker.
Here’s a quick recap for anyone just catching up. Marcee Gray spent months after her son murdered four people at Apalachee High School acting like his personal PR team from the outside. She read him fan mail comparisons to the Sandy Hook and Aurora theater shooters. She promised to build him a “Colty shrine” once she got some photos printed. She passed messages along to people in his online communities, the same communities that had him marinating in mass shooter admiration long before he ever picked up that rifle. She posted his photos and read the online comments and likes to him like a hype woman and sat there while her son bragged that he was more popular than the guy who tried to assassinate Donald Trump last year. It’s almost like she wanted her son to be a school shooter.
When investigators finally caught on and cut her off, staff said Colt Gray changed into what one official called basically a different kid. That’s not ambiguous. That’s a woman who was actively feeding whatever this thing was inside her son, right up until someone with actual authority made her stop.
So why isn’t she facing charges? Barrow County DA Brad Smith says he doesn’t want to prosecute a case where Colt Gray ends up being the victim. I get it, but I’m not buying it. Colt Gray can be both a victim and a mass murderer at the same time. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive, and any prosecutor worth his law degree should be able to hold both ideas in his head at once.
Smith is a guy who took Colt’s guilty plea with no deal on the table, no negotiated sentence, and nothing handed to the defense. Colt Gray is going to die in prison, full stop. Smith wasn’t squeamish about throwing the book at a 16-year-old. So don’t tell me he suddenly gets queasy at the idea of his mother facing consequences because it might require acknowledging her son was failed by her too. If anything, that should make the case easier to bring, not harder.
Smith also pointed out that Marcee Gray barely spent any time in Barrow County in the two years before the shooting, like that’s supposed to settle the matter.
Fine, then refer it to whatever county she actually was in. Justice doesn’t end at the county line. If she committed crimes somewhere else, somebody else’s DA needs to pick up the phone and start looking, because “not my jurisdiction” isn’t the same thing as “not a crime.”
Somebody in the State of Georgia needs to actually dig into what Marcee Gray was doing before September 4, 2024, instead of just shrugging at the two years leading up to it and calling it somebody else’s problem.
The dad will effectively be locked up for life starting tomorrow. The son’s locked up for life, literally. And mom gets to walk because prosecuting her would be uncomfortable? That’s not justice. That’s a cop-out.
