
Ghost guns aren’t a new problem. For years, the standard version of one was what’s known as a “kit gun.” An “80% complete” frame or receiver, sold with just enough machining left undone to keep it from technically being a firearm at the point of sale, along with the drill bits and jigs to finish the job in your garage. No serial number, no background check, and no paper trail. It was a workaround for people who wanted a gun without the government knowing about it, and it required at least a little patience and a little competence with tools.
Then 3D printers got cheap and good enough to make the workaround pointless. Instead of buying a kit and drilling out a receiver, you could download a file and print one. Instead of needing a drill press, you just needed a printer that a hobbyist might already own for cosplay armor or minifigure production.
The skill floor dropped to almost nothing. Printable frames, printable lower receivers, and printable full-auto sears that turn a semi-automatic into something else entirely. All of it circulated online the way any other file does, copied and reposted faster than anyone could take it down.
Predictably, kids started getting caught with the stuff before they could use it. A 13-year-old in Pierce County, Washington, was found this past fall with twenty-three firearms in his home. Many of them were homemade long guns built from 3D-printed parts, alongside months of social media posts fixated on mass shootings.
Thankfully, this kid never got the chance to act. That’s the version of this story that should make you feel a little better, and it’s also the version that should worry you, because “caught in time” isn’t a category law enforcement gets credit for controlling. It’s luck, tips, and nosy relatives doing the work that policy hasn’t figured out how to do yet.
Which brings us to New York City, where the NYPD’s own numbers make the shift from kit guns to printed guns impossible to ignore. In 2021, cops recovered 263 ghost guns citywide, and exactly one of them was 3D-printed. By 2024, that number had jumped to 109 out of 409. That’s not a blip. That’s the kind of data that gets a district attorney calling up state lawmakers.
New York’s DA pushed for legislation restricting 3D-printed weapons and weapon parts, and it also requires printer manufacturers to build in “blockers” designed to stop the machines from printing gun components in the first place. The legislature passed it, and Governor Kathy Hochul, who’d proposed the bill herself, signed it into law.
I want to be clear that I think the intent behind this law is correct. Nobody should be able to print a working firearm in their bedroom with zero oversight. If there’s a technical fix that closes that door, I’m all for it in principle. My problem is that the technical fix doesn’t exist yet. At least, not in any form that actually works. Pretending otherwise is how you end up with a law that reads well in a press release and does nothing to stop the problem it was crafted for.
We’ve been down this road before with a much simpler object: currency. It took well over a decade of dedicated, well-funded, international effort to get consumer scanners and printers reliably refusing to reproduce banknotes. A banknote is a flat image with a handful of known, unchanging visual markers baked into it specifically so machines can recognize it.
A gun part is a three-dimensional shape that can be modified, disguised, split into “innocent” subcomponents, or redesigned entirely by anyone with basic CAD skills.
If it took that long to teach a machine to recognize a picture of Lincoln, I have no idea what timeline we’re supposed to believe for teaching one to recognize geometry that’s actively being engineered to not look like what it is.
And that’s only taking into account future printers. There’s also the problem of every printer already sold, sitting in garages and makerspaces right now, none of which is getting retrofitted with a blocker because that’s not how consumer electronics work.
Manufacturers aren’t recalling three million printers to install detection software. They’re going to comply going forward, if they comply at all, and the installed base of “safe” old hardware becomes the new source for anyone who wants to get around the rule.
Add to that the fact that 3D printing as a hobby has a well-earned reputation for tinkering, firmware flashing, and finding the workaround just because it’s there. You’ve got a community that will treat any printer-side restriction as a puzzle to solve rather than a wall to stop at. Open-source firmware for these machines already exists specifically because people don’t like being told what their hardware can and can’t do.
None of that is even considering the fact that this is a New York law, and New York is only one state. Ghost guns aren’t even banned in every state, 3D-printed or otherwise.
So I’m behind the intent here, genuinely, but intent doesn’t keep these guns out of a school. As written, this is toothless legislation dressed up as a solution. And until the technology catches up to the promise being made about it, that’s all it’s going to be.
