I want to say up front that I hate citing The Sun, The Daily Mail, and especially (spit) Breitbart as sources on this blog. None of them are outlets I’d normally trust to tell me what day it is. But credit where it’s due, all three managed to dig up genuinely cromulent information on this case, so here we are.

Anyway, here’s a quick recap for anyone just tuning in. On Friday an attacker armed with a sword walked into Brinell High School in the small Swedish town of Fagersta and killed a 17-year-old girl, leaving three teenage boys injured, two of them seriously. The school had only just reopened after summer break, so for a good chunk of these kids it was one of their first days back. Police responded within ten minutes of the alarm being raised, which by most accounts kept this from being even worse than it already was.

The suspect has since been named as 18-year-old Liam Nebel, who’s now formally been detained on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Depending on which outlet you read, he either was a current student or a former one, but either way he had a legitimate entry card that let him walk right into the building like he belonged there. Later reporting also says he’d been placed in foster care last year after what’s being described as extensive failings in his home environment, which explains some things without excusing any of them.

Reports now say Nebel was dressed as a tribute to Anton Lundin Pettersson, the guy who carried out the 2015 Trollhättan sword attack I covered on this blog back when it happened, right down to the same general aesthetic of a mask, a helmet, and a long dark coat.

Add in the TikTok account posting tributes to mass murderers and the reporting that police are now looking at far-right online communities as part of the investigation, and you’ve got a kid who didn’t just admire a decade-old atrocity from a distance; he apparently built his entire identity around recreating it. Again, possibly a TCC-related attack.

There’s also some conflicting reporting on whether police actually managed to hit him when they opened fire, with some outlets saying he took a bullet to the leg and others saying officers shot and missed before taking him down. I’ll let that detail sort itself out as more comes in rather than pretend I know which version is accurate.

Nebel’s lawyer says his client hasn’t confessed to police but hasn’t contested the murder charge either, which is about as close to an admission as you can get without actually saying the words.

And police believe the girl he killed was a random victim, not someone he had any particular grudge against, which tracks with basically every case like this I’ve ever written about. These cowards almost never go after the people who supposedly wronged them. They go after whoever happens to be closest when they finally work up the nerve, because the point was never really about revenge; it’s always about ‘making a name’ for themselves.

Every crime like this traces its way back to Columbine eventually, whether the guy holding the weapon even realizes it or not. Pettersson was already working off that same template back in 2015, and now Nebel’s working off Pettersson, which makes him a copy of a copy at this point. A third-generation loser riding the fumes of two other losers who came before him.

There’s nothing new here, there’s no fresh grievance, and there’s no original idea rattling around in this kid’s head. There’s just another sad little guy who found a costume and a hero online and decided a dead 17-year-old girl was worth it so he could feel like the main character for an afternoon.
