Principal: Bartley had chance to flee:

The other day I posted about Campbell County High Assistant Principal Jim Pierce testifying in the juvenile status hearing for shooter Kenny Bartley. Now it’s Principal Gary Seale’s turn. According to Seale’s testimony, Bartley had an opportunity to flee the office rather than loading the gun and firing it.

Seale soon found himself distracted by a tardy student who showed up at the guard shack. Meanwhile, Bartley had arrived at Pierce’s office. Pierce again radioed Seale, who headed to Pierce’s office.

“Mr. Bruce walked in behind me,” Seale said. “Little Kenny was sitting in a chair. I asked him what was going on.”

Seale took a seat next to Bartley. Bruce stood near the door. Pierce was seated behind his desk.

“I just told Kenny, ‘I want what you have in your pocket,’ ” Pierce testified.

Bartley reached for his pocket. Seale did, too, but Bartley swatted his hand away and pulled out a gun, Seale testified.

“Kenny stood up with the gun, waving it at all of us,” Pierce said.

Bruce moved from the door to the back of the room, Seale said.

“I was like, ‘Little Kenny, is that real?’ ” Seale testified. “He was like, ‘I’ll show you. I don’t like you anyway.’ “

Seale and Pierce testified that Bartley then reached into his pocket, pulled out an ammunition clip, loaded the gun and opened fire. Seale was struck in the groin. Bruce was struck in the chest. Pierce was shot in the side and hand while wrestling Bartley to the floor.

As soon as Ken Bruce moved to the back of the room Kenny Bartley could have just walked out the door. Instead, he chose to fire his gun killing Bruce and wounding Seale and Pierce.

An officer also testified that drugs played a major role in the shooting.

Campbell County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Darrell Mongar testified that Bartley had 10 Xanax pills in his pocket. Xanax is a brand name for a prescription narcotic sedative.

Under questioning by defense attorney Mike Hatmaker, Mongar described Bartley’s reaction once handcuffed.

“He started crying,” Mongar said. “He stated that he had stolen his father’s gun and brought it to school to trade for Oxycontin (an opiate-based prescription painkiller). He said none of this would have happened if he hadn’t taken (two of) the Xanaxes.”

Considering he was trying to trade the gun for OxyContin, it’s safe to assume that the Xanax wasn’t prescribed to him.

If Bartley is tried as an adult, he’s looking at a minimum of 51 years. Since Bartley has a prior juvenile record, that swings things in favor of him being tried as an adult since rehabilitation obviously hasn’t worked.

A decision should be reached today.

  1. None of that would have happened if he hadn’t have taken two of those xanax pills? He’s full of it. It takes a while for it to get into your system, like any drug, you will not feel the effects for quite some time.Xanax isn’t a sedative, it’s prescribed for anxiety and depression. It’s in the class of benzodiazepines. It’s used to treat Generalized Anxiety Disorder, anxiety associated with depression, and Panic Disorder with or without agoraphobia.Sedative? Yeah, you could say that generally speaking… but when you say sedative you make it seem as though it’s like Lunesta – a sleep aid. And it’s not. This article doesn’t give all the facts to the situation and it doesn’t surprise me.

  2. No one’s making you stay. 🙂

  3. You crack me up Trench 😎

  4. How sweet, but honestly save your pity for someone with as low an IQ as your own… like your bf down there for example.

  5. Is that the best you got? I’ve been insulted by better. And don’t take it personally I pity anyone who feels the need to excuse a killer’s actions.

  6. First off thou shall not kill is way too blanket (what about killing in a war or when your life is being threatened for any other reason) and was written by a murderer, of course he was only a murderer when he was younger.

  7. Thank you for clarifying this for me. I appreciate you not using sarcasm to deliver your message. It seems to be the norm on this site. So I apologize if I was defensive.

  8. Psychopath is an obsolete term for this disorder, meaning it is no longer used. The same doctor that used this obsolete term was hired by the D.A.(state). He was also the only expert who did not testify in Kenneth’s favor. Hmmm… This same “expert” claimed that Valium increased thought clarity, and that it did not impair motor movement, hand eye coordination. Hmmmm… it is a tranquilizer!!! WTF? Oh and a critical side note, any person under the age of 18 years old cannot be diagnosed with Anti-Social Personality Disorder (the correct name for this disorder.) This case was going to adult court before the first witness ever took the stand. It was all political, no justice was served.

  9. Don’t forget that ‘psychopath’ is not a diagnosable disorder and is not in the DSM and also, no one agrees on what the term entails other than the fact that it is meant to describe a severe form of APD. Some psychs say it can be a person who is incapable of feeling remorse or sympathy for anyone period, others say a psychopath merely chooses who he feels sympathy for. In the case of the latter, that fits just about anyone who has ever done anything wrong selfishly. No matter what your position on a psychopath you can find ‘experts’ opinions to back up your personal opinion. They disagree so greatly that the opinions often contradict each other and turn up meaningless when attempting to differentiate between psychopathy and APD.If you have to have been diagnosed with conduct disorder before you can be diagnosed with APD, then unless this kid is diagnosed with conduct disorder, his problems may be rooted in something far more complex. Anyway, a diagnosis just confines symptoms, it still doesn’t answer any questions. Which, I’m sure you know already. I’m not really addressing anyone in particular, just talking about the issue.

  10. Psyhcopath may not be used anymore. But in this case, its needed I am not a retard.God.And (IN MY OPINION) those experts need to get their heads checked. He’s had this problem since he was born.I heard from Bruce’s sister-in-law that in court they said that his father was afraid to be in the house alone with him.And that he had a gun he kept in there.Do you happen to know which gun that was?If you guessed the one he used on the principals you would be right. He kept it in the house for HIS protection from little Kenny.Because when big Kenneth got a girlfriend and the first time she slept over, little Kenny tried to choke her.He went into the room and tried to literally kill her.Thats why big Kenneth dead-bolted his door.Which doesnt surprise me.Since little Kenny kept his neighbor hostage when he was 13.And he’s been in juvie a million times. The point im getting to is…treatment WILL NOT help Kenny.

  11. Psychopath is convenient to you because it says he is untreatable. But what do you know about psychopathy? No one can agree to what it means. You don’t know that he is untreatable. He hasn’t even had treatment. I was a terror when I was a child, and thought nothing of murder and destruction. It was second nature to me. Low and behold, I am fine now. Thanks to a few people in my life that knew how to save me. Until they came into my life, I was hopeless. You don’t know that treatment won’t help him. You don’t even know him or anything about him nor the reasons he has no impulse control nor the reasons he desires to harm people. You just don’t know. Until you can get to the root of his issues, you can’t determine he is untreatable. You’re not qualified to make that decision. If you want to label him a psychopath, that’s your prerogative. But it’s not an explanation nor is it a diagnosis. Which means, quite frankly, that it’s meaningless.

  12. You don’t know that he is untreatable. He hasn’t even had treatment. I was a terror when I was a child, and thought nothing of murder and destruction. It was second nature to me. Low and behold, I am fine now. Thanks to a few people in my life that knew how to save me. Until they came into my life, I was hopeless.Did you kill anybody? He did. For that he gets to go to jail for the rest of his life.

  13. I never said anything against putting him in jail, I’m talking about someone using a term to describe someone that isn’t a term they are qualified to use let alone the fact that it is not a diagnosis.

  14. You know his father, not him. You only know about him, you don’t know HIM.Why are you screaming about people trying to kick you off of this site? You’re a bit paranoid, maybe you should be taking some xanax?Your opinion is invalid. You can say whatever you want, but you can’t label him a psychopath because 1- you’re not qualified to make that statement and 2- it’s not a diagnosis and 3- just because he hasn’t been treatable so far doesn’t mean there isn’t something out there that will help him. It took me 11 years. Maybe it will take him twenty.

  15. So is your father one of the ones who stole from Kenny Bartley while he worked at his store?Your father working with Kenny Bartley means absolutely nothing. You didn’t know Kenneth, or you’d know that he was never given a chance to be rehabilitated.
