On Friday May 17th, a school shooting was stopped at Parkrose High School in Portland, Oregon when football coach Keanon Lowe tackled a student who had brought a shotgun to school. The student, Angel Granados-Diaz, was allegedly despondent and may have been trying to commit suicide.

Coach Lowe noticed the student walking into a classroom with the shotgun. Lowe was able to grab the gun away from the student and restrain him until police arrived. Lowe has been hailed as a hero for his actions.

Granados-Diaz has been charged with possession of a firearm in a public building among other charges.

This is another example of a school shooting being stopped by a good guy without a gun. Coach Lowe was not armed yet was still able to disarm the student. This runs counter to the NRA’s argument that only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun.

Coach Lowe also showed great empathy toward the student after the incident, saying he felt compassion for the young man who was obviously in pain.
