On Tuesday, a gunman opened fire at School No. 175 in Kazan, Russia, killing nine students and one teacher. The shooter, identified as 19-year-old Ilnaz Galyaviev, injured 21 others. Galyaviev was a former student of the school. Reports indicate that Galyaviev legally obtained his shotgun just days before the shooting.
This is the deadliest school shooting in Russia since the 2018 Kerch Polytechnic College massacre, which left 20 dead.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences to the victims’ families and instructed officials to review Russia’s gun laws.
A number of students escaped injury by jumping from windows of the school building.
Galyaviev reportedly posted on a social media platform shortly before the attack claiming to be a ‘god’ who was going to kill a ‘large number of people’. The post was reportedly on a Russian social media site called VKontakte.
My thoughts are with the victims and their families.
