The Cover-Up of the ICE Killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo Keeps Getting Uglier

Earlier this week I wrote about ICE gunning down Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston’s East End. Salgado Araujo was a 52-year-old construction business owner who’d been in this country for nearly 35 years, whom the agency accused of “weaponizing” his work van and trying to run over an officer. He died at a local hospital with a bullet in his abdomen while his own son watched. That’s the short version.

A few days later, thanks to a pile of new reporting, the long version is a lot worse, and it’s worth walking through in order, because the pattern here isn’t subtle once you lay it out.

No Cameras, No Surprise

Let’s start with the body cameras, or rather, the lack of them. DHS confirmed that none of the agents on scene had body-worn cameras. Frankly, I wouldn’t put much stock in footage even if they did, since we’ve all watched enough of these stories to know that law enforcement has a funny habit of having their cameras conveniently malfunction, get turned off, or simply go “unrecorded” whenever the footage might actually implicate them.

Still, DHS wants you to know this isn’t their fault. They’re blaming Democrats and the government shutdown for the delay in issuing cameras, which is a neat trick considering the shutdown ended months ago. Not to mention the federal government has somehow found the money to redo the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial, throw an MMA fight on the White House lawn, and bankroll whatever grift they’re calling “America’s State Fair.” Somehow there’s always money for a spectacle and never money for accountability.

UPDATE 7/12/2026: Per an AP report, Congress gave DHS $20 million for “the procurement, deployment, and operations of body-worn cameras” for officers carrying out immigration enforcement tasks.

Wrong Guy, Wrong Van, Same Racial Profile

Then there’s the matter of who ICE was even after in the first place. DHS now admits Salgado Araujo wasn’t their actual target. Their agents were staking out a property, spotted a white work van with a man who “resembled” the guy they wanted, and pulled him over.

We are talking about several Mexican men driving a white work van in Houston, Texas, one of the largest and most diverse cities in the country. Do you have any idea how common that description is in a city that size? I’d wager you could throw a rock in almost any direction downtown and hit a white work van with a Latino man behind the wheel.

This wasn’t a “targeted enforcement operation.” It was profiling with extra steps, and it got a man with no criminal record killed over a resemblance that apparently began and ended with his skin color and his vehicle’s paint job.

Houston Mayor Doesn’t Want to “Play Politics”

Meanwhile, back in Houston, Mayor John Whitmire has decided the best move here is to do absolutely nothing.

He announced that HPD won’t be conducting its own investigation, insisting the department will just “remain in contact” with federal investigators, and that he doesn’t want to “play politics” with the situation.

Whitmire is nominally a Democrat, which makes his response all the more infuriating, since it amounts to rolling over and showing his belly to an administration that’s been running roughshod over immigrant communities for the better part of a year. This is exactly why I think the Democratic Party needs more spine and fewer Whitmires. You don’t get to call yourself an opposition party while helping the other side bury the evidence.

The Texas Rangers Are Waiting for a Call That Isn’t Coming

The Texas Rangers aren’t stepping in either, and here’s the kicker: they can’t, or won’t, unless somebody asks them to. That request has to come from the feds, the governor, or local officials, and none of those doors lead anywhere useful.

DHS isn’t asking, even though it asked the Rangers to investigate a nearly identical shooting last year. Houston’s mayor isn’t going to ask, since we just covered his position on all this. And Governor Greg Abbott, who has spent this entire administration playing chief toady to Trump’s mass deportation machine, sure isn’t going to lift a finger either.

So the state’s own investigative body just sits there with its hands tied, not because it lacks the authority, but because everyone with the power to make the call has decided looking away is the safer political move.

Pressuring the Only Witnesses Out of the Country

Now here’s where it gets truly rotten. The three men who were riding in the van with Salgado Araujo, including his own brother, were detained by ICE during the stop, and reports indicate they’re now being pressured to sign self-deportation orders. These are the only surviving witnesses to what actually happened that morning, and their account directly contradicts the official story.

According to them, there were no ICE agents anywhere near the front or back of the van when the shooting started. Officers were on the sides. One of the men put it bluntly in a handwritten statement: the government’s version is a lie.

So naturally, the same agency whose story is falling apart is now trying to hustle the only people who can dispute it out of the country before they can testify to anything. If that’s not an attempt to silence inconvenient witnesses, I don’t know what is.

The Video They Didn’t Want You to See

And then there’s the video. New footage has surfaced showing an unmarked ICE vehicle, no visible lights, no markings, chasing down Salgado Araujo’s van through a construction zone and at one point driving on the wrong side of the road to catch up with him. None of it captures the actual shooting, of course, because that would be far too convenient for anyone trying to get to the truth.

We still don’t know the name of the officer who pulled the trigger. Not a single name, not a badge number, nothing. Just another masked federal agent who gets to walk away from killing an unarmed man while the rest of us are left piecing together his crime scene from gas station security cameras and a homeowner’s doorbell footage.

When the Reckoning Comes

If this administration is ever evicted from power, there needs to be a real reckoning. Not a few token firings or quiet reassignments to another field office.

Everyone who had a hand in this, from the agent who fired the shot to the officials who tried to disappear the witnesses to the higher-ups who signed off on covering it all up, needs to face actual trials.

Anything less just tells the next administration that this kind of behavior is acceptable, and I’m sick and tired of watching executions in the street become acceptable.
