A Haysville, Kansas, couple is heading to federal prison for a combined two-plus decades after investigators found dozens of images and videos of CSAM on their phones. 28-year-old Gavin Onuffer was a maintenance chief in the Marine Corps. 22-year-old Addilynn Onuffer is his dependa, I mean, wife. Both pleaded guilty and are now paying for it with double-digit sentences.
The story started, as they all do, with a tip from Kik, the a mobile messaging app that lets users chat anonymously without a phone number attached to the account. This has made it a longtime hotbed for sex offenders, pedophiles, CSAM collectors, and child traffickers.
In July 2024, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children got a tip from Kik that a user had uploaded dozens of CSAM files. Wichita PD traced the account back to an IP address belonging to Gavin Onuffer, and a search warrant turned up another 17 files.
When investigators finally sat the couple down toward the end of April, their stories diverged fast. Mr. Onuffer claimed he did receive CSAM on Kik but deleted it and blocked whoever sent it. I’m surprised he didn’t go with the Principal Skinner burlesque house defense in that he was looking for CSAM, so he knew where to avoid the CSAM.
However, Mrs. Onuffer told a very different story. She admitted to using Kik to trade CSAM herself, and she told detectives that she and her husband watched porn together on their phones, and that she liked to roleplay as a child during sex. I’m usually not one to kink-shame, but WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK???
More than 351 files turned up in a password-protected folder on Gavin Onuffer’s phone, the bulk of them sexual in nature, some of it sent over Discord, because when it’s not Kik, it’s Discord.
Several of those files, according to Addilynn Onuffer’s own plea agreement, were sent by her to him because he wanted to receive them. So much for the delete-and-block story.
Addilynn Onuffer pleaded guilty to distributing CSAM and was sentenced back in May to 13 years. Gavin Onuffer pleaded guilty to receipt of CSAM and was sentenced to a little over 10 years.
When there’s a couple who are engaged in crime, especially crimes against children, I always wonder how two people like this ended up together. In the years I’ve been writing this blog, I’ve seen plenty of stories of men consuming and trading CSAM. However, women doing it right alongside them is almost unheard of.
So did these two find each other because they were already both like this, or did one of them pull the other one in, normalize it a little at a time until it became something they did as a couple? Either way, ew.
But seriously, Gavin Onuffer wasn’t just some guy with a phone and bad impulses. He was a member of the United States Marine Corps. He was a man who swore an oath to defend the Constitution and, by extension, the public that Constitution serves. That oath is supposed to signal a baseline of character the rest of us can trust. Instead, he was allegedly ‘deleting-and-blocking’ 351 CSAM files that sat in a locked folder on his phone.
A U.S. Attorney said about the case that people who take pleasure in viewing, creating, or distributing images of CSAM are a danger to society and belong behind bars. I can’t argue with that.
I’d just like to add that with the current administration refusing to release the Epstein files, this kind of behavior probably isn’t frowned upon by them as much as it should be.
